The 7-Day Stuttering Shift

Day 3

Day One 👉 Day Two 👉 Day Three 👉 Day Four 👉 Day Five 👉 Day Six 👉 Day Seven

  1. Read the following by yourself trying out both approaches to Attention-Shifting: focusing on a freeing feeling and making a movie in your head (you can use Online Voice Recorder to see your speech). Move on to the next once you’ve read each one ten times in a row rating yourself having at least 8/10 naturalness.

    1. One sentence from something that interests you.

    2. Two sentences from something that interests you.

    3. A paragraph from something that interests you.

    4. One page from something that interests you.

(You can keep track on paper in your journal).

Once you’ve tried both, pick the one that works best for you to do the rest of today’s practice.

2. Read the following within earshot of someone else using Attention-Shifting. Move on to the next once you’ve read each one ten times in a row rating yourself having at least 8/10 naturalness.

  1. One sentence from something that interests you.

  2. Two sentences from something that interests you.

  3. A paragraph from something that interests you.

  4. One page from something that interests you.

3. Tell someone something that interests you using Attention-Shifting (tell briefly, don’t have a full conversation). It counts once you rate yourself having at least 8/10 naturalness.

(It can be helpful to preface your monologue with something like, “Hey, I’m practicing something new with my speech, do you have a second?”).

4. Have three conversations using Attention-Shifting. They count if you rate yourself having at least 8/10 naturalness.

(You can look on your List of Listeners Target for potential partners).

5. Complete one Challenge Situation using Similar Syllables. It’s a “challenge situation” if it’s a 4 or higher on your Speech Stress Thermometer. It counts once you rate yourself at having at least 8/10 naturalness.
